Ceres is a dwarf planet in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. Ceres is the first asteroid discovered by Giuseppe Piazzi on January 1, 1801 at the Palermo Observatory in Sicily. On January 22, 2014, the European Space Agency (ESA) said that water vapor emissions were detected around Ceres, forming a sparse and temporary atmosphere. This was unexpected because asteroids generally do not emit water vapor, a characteristic of comets.
