๐ŸŒŽ2/21 - International Mother Language Day

International Mother Language Day is an annual worldwide event held on February 21 to raise awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity and promote multilingualism.

World Mother Language Day, first announced by UNESCO on November 17, 1999, was officially recognized by the UN General Assembly with the adoption of a UN resolution in 2002. Mother Language Day was established to promote the conservation and protection of all languages. The idea to celebrate World Mother Language Day was led by Bangladesh. The anniversary date is set for February 21st. Pakistani police opened fire on protesters demanding that Bengali be recognized as the official language in Dhaka, east Pakistan (now Bangladesh), killing four people. After this incident, Bengali was also recognized as the official language of East Pakistan, and Bangladesh designated this day as 'Language Movement Day' after independence.
