2012 is an unusual year for people around the world to worry about apocalypse, and in fact, various astronomical alignments and numerological formulas have been proposed for this date.

Scholars from various disciplines were quick to dismiss predictions of catastrophic events. Mayan scholars say that no classical Mayan record predicts an imminent fate, and the idea that the Long Count calendar ends in 2012 misrepresents Mayan history and culture. Astronomers rejected the various apocalyptic scenarios proposed as pseudoscience refuted by elementary astronomical observations.
