Winfrey was born to a single mother in rural Mississippi and grew up in Milwaukee. Winfrey was sent to live with her father Vernon Winfrey, a barber, in Nashville, Tennessee, and had a radio job in high school. At the age of 19, she became a co-anchor for local evening news. Winfrey's emotional and spontaneous delivery put her on the stage of a weekly talk show and she was able to take first place in a Chicago-based talk show. Since then, she has established her own production company. She is the only black billionaire in the world and the greatest black philanthropist in American history. By 2007, she was sometimes named the most influential woman in the world. In 2013, Winfrey received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Obama and earned honorary doctorate degrees from Duke and Harvard. In 2008, she formed her own network called the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN). She is best known for the Oprah Winfrey show, a talk show that aired in Chicago for 25 years from 1986 to 2011.
