Roald Engelbrgt Gravning Amundsen was a Norwegian polar explorer. He was a key figure in the period known as the Age of Heroes of Antarctic Expeditions.
In 1909, Amundsen began planning an expedition to Antarctica. He left Norway on the Framship in June 1910 and arrived in Antarctica in January 1911. His party plays in October after establishing a series of supply depots at camps and barriers (now known as the Ross Ice Shelf) in the Gulf of Wales. The five-member group led by Amundsen successfully reached the South Pole for the first time on December 14, 1911. Amundsen, a challenging adventurer, is known for later generations and is highly respected by the Association of Exploration.
