In 1881, he composed a cantata called In Fianda, received a prize in Milan, and quit the conservatory to work as a composer and conductor of a traveling opera company.

The most significant moment in Mascagni's life was in 1889, when he composed and submitted an opera, the Cavaleria Rusticana. It has attracted worldwide attention, and is currently regarded as one of the earliest and representative works of Verismo Opera.
