Galileo Galilei Observates Galilei Satellite for the First Time
The Galilei satellites are Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Calisto. They were first discovered by Galileo Galilei in December 1609 or January 1610, and he was recognized as a Jupiter satellite in March 1610. They were the first objects found orbiting other planets than Earth.
They are one of the largest celestial bodies in the solar system except for the sun and eight planets and have a radius larger than that of dwarf planets. Ganymede is the largest satellite in the solar system, and its mass is only about half that of Mercury, but much larger than Mercury. While Galilei satellites are spherical, Jupiter's much smaller satellites all take on irregular forms because of their weak magnetic gravity.
