Patras Carnival, the largest festival in the Mediterranean and the Balkans, is associated with antiquity. According to this tradition, believers follow the ancient god Dionysus to call on God for special festivals. Since then, and as a result of the city's prosperity in the late 19th century, Carnival has become more regular. Also, the first carnival carts appeared in the 1870s. At the time, the cart was nothing more than a personal creation. Only later did Patrasi build a large number of carts.
