Wilhelm Konrad Roentgen was awarded the first Nobel Prize in Physics in 1901 on November 8, 1895, as a German mechanical engineer and physicist for generating and detecting electromagnetic radiation in a range of wavelengths known as X-rays or Roentgen rays. To honor Roentgen's achievements, in 2004 the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) named after him element number 111: roentgenium, a radioactive element with several unstable isotopes. The unit of measure roentgen was also named after him.
